3rd DNS/LES Course

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulations (LES)

Theory and Practice, March 11 - 15, 2013

The DNS/LES course introduces participants to the route followed from mathematical modeling of physical phenomenon to the solution of modeled systems using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques. The participants are introduced to the construction of numerical schemes for the discretization in space and time, higher-order discretization schemes as well as the stability of explicit and implicit time integration schemes. In the tutorials, open source mathematical software tools like Python and Matlab will be used in small groups of participants to examine and further develop the concepts already introduced in the classes. The open source library "OpenFoam" will also be used in practical sessions, where small groups of participants will study the course material in the framework of turbulent channel and natural convection flows. The participants will further be instructed on additional topics relevant to LES, including the effects of filtering and the choice of the sub-grid scale (SGS) model. All results will be compared against validated reference DNS data and discussed in detail to highlight the major capabilities and difficulties involving DNS and LES techniques. Since all software tools are based upon a Linux based operating system, it is recommended that the participants have at least a basic working knowledge of Linux or Linux type systems, to take full advantage of the group work sessions.

Course Schedule

Lectures (4 half days) will run from 9:00 to 12:00 and practice (5 half days) from 13:30 to 16:30. All presentations will be given in English.

Who should attend?

The course is mainly intended for engineers, researchers and students, who have basic knowledge in scientic computing or CFD and who plan to conduct DNS/LES for scientific or industrial investigations.
